Utility Templates

Utility templates allow you to create configurations that can be applied to Interconnection Packages. Each template is intended to be used for a specific utility or utility-initiated set of requirements.

Creating utility tempaltes

To create an utility template, go to Utility Templates (opens in a new tab). Once there, we recommend copying our Generic Utility Interconnection Requirements and tuning them to your specific utility, as this template has many of the settings that utilities recommend. If you want to start from scratch, simply click "+ Utility template", and enter your unique values for each setting (if applicable).

Inverter protection settings

You can modify the Inverter settings to keep you in compliance if the utility has adopted IEEE 1547 (opens in a new tab). If the utility has no inverter proteciton setting requirements, simply do not add any to the template. We will automatically calculate the Total Clearing Time (seconds) based on the entered cycles with an assumed 60hz.

We recommend searching for utility-specific 1547 compliance documentation when creating this. If there is none, the utiilty likely has not adopted the standard yet.

  • Example Utility: Con-Edison - does require specific inverter settings, frequency ranges, and clearing times detailed in their requirements here (opens in a new tab) in section 4.5.2.

Protective relay settings

Protective relay settings can be added for new service connections. If this is connecting to an existing service, many times this will not be required and can be left empty. For utilities that require these settings, you can enter the specific relay that the utility requires, the 52-# setting, and every protective function and setting that the utility requires.

We recommend searching the internet using 'Utility Name - IEEE 1547 Protective Relay' to see if that utility has adopted the requirement.

  • Example Utility: Con-Edison - IEEE 1547 is not required for PV-only systems but is required for microgrids. You can see the documentation here (opens in a new tab) section 7.5.

Notes

You can also add specific notes that you want the utility to understand about your relay and interconnection system. These are typically used for utility-specific callouts that are needed for any project connecting to that utility.

All utility templates are not modifyable at the project level. These settings are intended to be used on a per-utility bases and then applied to projects and designs based on which utility the project is located in.
